Sitting Bull, Thathanke Iyotake**, meaning: buffalo who sits down,\u00a0showing the great Lakota Sioux chief in full head dress, composite image created by the artist, as requested by the commissioner. \u00a0<\/p>
<\/p>
I managed to give him a slight smile - I wanted to portray his soul & strength - his legacy - not only the pain and suffering of his physical life that is so apparent in his photos. He was murdered in 1890 to keep his people in submission (look up 'the Ghost Dance, battle of Little Bighorn).<\/p>
<\/p>
This was a very challenging commission because I couldn't find any photos of Sitting Bull in this forward facing position with the headdress. Instead I had to do extensive research and put the image together from several different ones. Colours were especially difficult as that type of photography did not exist back then. But by utilising images and artefacts from museums I managed to create this painting. It felt like an honour to paint his portrait. Love, gratitude and endless respect to our Ancestors.<\/p>
